'This data center belongs downtown': Developer proposes 20-story vertical data center in Kansas City to trade suburban sprawl for urban density
THE SO WHAT
A 20-story downtown data center proposal signals that land and latency constraints are starting to outweigh traditional suburban siting norms. If you depend on low-latency AI workloads, expect more edge and urban builds—and more friction with city planning, power, and cooling regimes.

Artificial islands for data centers and fabs are a reminder that AI industrial policy is now literally reshaping coastlines. If you depend on Southeast Asia for manufacturing or infra, start mapping how Penang’s “Silicon Island” could shift talent, incentives, and power availability over the next 5–10 years.

Record profits from surging memory prices underline that the AI boom is still bottlenecked on HBM and DRAM, not just GPUs. If you’re planning large training runs or inference fleets for 2026–2027, lock in memory-heavy capacity and pricing now rather than assuming today’s spot dynamics will hold.
