OpenAI released GPT-5.6 broadly on July 9 after a limited preview that began June 26.
The family includes Sol, its flagship model; Terra, the balanced production tier; and Luna, the fastest and least expensive option. It arrived alongside ChatGPT Work, OpenAI’s clearest attempt yet to turn ChatGPT and Codex into a shared execution environment for knowledge work.
The headline is a new frontier model.
The signal is a new operating layer.
GPT-5.6 is being packaged around model routing, tool use, long-running work, connected company context, computer control, scheduled tasks, and multi-agent execution.
The model matters. But the larger move is OpenAI assembling the pieces of an agent system that can plan work, act across tools, create finished artifacts, and keep working beyond the initial prompt.

1. Sol, Terra, and Luna are an architecture, not a leaderboard
OpenAI is moving away from treating every release as one universal intelligence upgrade.
Sol is positioned for the hardest reasoning and agentic work. Terra is the balanced production model. Luna is optimized for speed and cost. In the API, GPT-5.6 can also coordinate concurrent sub-agents and synthesize their work within a single request.
The pricing reinforces the architecture:
